The Agricultural and Livestock Service of Chile announced that, starting in December, Chile and Japan will begin the pilot phase for the exchange of electronic phytosanitary certificates through the paperless ePhyto system. This milestone will benefit exports of horticultural products, forestry products, and propagation material, improving border inspection times, reducing documentation errors, and strengthening shipment traceability.

During this transition period, the Agricultural and Livestock Service of Chile and Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will continue issuing traditional printed certificates. At the same time, both authorities will conduct electronic transmission tests to validate system performance, interoperability, and security. The official full implementation of a completely paperless exchange is expected for March 2026.

The adoption of the ePhyto system enhances trade between Chile and Japan by:

  • Streamlining border control processes

  • Reducing documentation-related errors

  • Strengthening traceability and information integrity

  • Improving technical cooperation between both countries

This progress reaffirms Chile’s commitment to the modernization and digitalization of its phytosanitary procedures, positioning the country as a regional leader in electronic certification and in the facilitation of agricultural trade.
